Homeland Security USA

If you have been so focused on inauguration the past few weeks, you may have missed ABC's newest show,

Is this show any different from something you would see on TruTV?

Should the shows on TruTV be allowed, as it may "give anybody any ideas" as steford said on one of the message boards? Could the same not be said for video games, cable tv, and movies?

While the quality of the show is not what one may expect from a major network, the content provides a public understanding of a "day in the life" of someone working at DHS.

After all, it is about Neighbors Helping Neighbors. And Homeland Security USA helps us understand the jobs are neighbors in our community are doing to help protect us.

Please note, Homeland Security USA should not be consfused with D.H.S. The Series.

SOA Key To "Connecting" Emergency Management Solutions.

The following picture highlights a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), as described in the presentation. Also included are links to some of the services that were discussed.

Solutions Highlighted During International Day on Disaster Reduction

During the International Day on Disaster Reduction presentation, several technical solutions were highlighted.

Over the next few days, addition material will be provided on these offerings. All of which can be operated independently or integrated together through the VirtualAgility solution.

VirtualAgility technology is secure, reliable and scalable. All of which are key elements to a disaster management solution.
The VirtualAgility OPS Center (VOC) is a COTS portal framework that integrates single sign-on, GIS, incident management, weather, presence awareness, comprehensive communications and other information sharing applications.
It is an SOA interface that aggregates data and applications and presents them in a user-defined display to provide a common operational picture. Context for data point display can include GIS maps, RSS feeds, weather, SOPs and plans.
Access to data can be authorized by role, mission or organization. Secure system access can be granted ad hoc to any approved user with a standard web browser, allowing instant additions of personnel during a crisis.

Additional information can be found on the VirtualAgility website at http://www.virtualagility.com.

Connecticut: CPTV special underscores need for emergency services volunteers
[Sep 9 Hartford]--Imagine if you called to report a fire or needed an ambulance and no one responded. Unthinkable? Many fear it is a real possibility.

The frightening scenario as well as solutions will be examined and discussed during the live September 11 broadcast of the CPTV documentary: "On Watch: Connecticut's Emergency Service Volunteers."

"This is a great opportunity for the public to become aware of the emergency needs in their communities and around the state," Governor Rell said. "There are many Connecticut citizens who know they can make a real difference and want to volunteer. This informative documentary will point them in the right direction."

The two-hour program will air at 8 p.m. and dozens of Connecticut's emergency service volunteers will be available to answer the public's questions and offer information about becoming a volunteer.

The documentary examines the importance and impact of Connecticut's emergency service volunteers, explores the issues behind the challenges of recruitment and retention and profiles methods to attract and sustain citizen volunteers.

The film examines several emergency situations including the 2005 Avon Mountain crash, the devastating Peachtree Apartments fire in Norwich in April, the July drownings of a father and son in Voluntown and a search-and-rescue operation at Case Mountain in Manchester in August.

"In about 70 percent of communities statewide, volunteers are the first line of defense for a host of emergencies – fire, emergency medical, manmade and natural disasters, terrorist threats and water rescue," said Commissioner James M. Thomas from the Department of Emergency Management & Homeland Security. "We hope the program inspires people to volunteer."

During the broadcast, viewers can call in on a toll-free number and talk with volunteers from various emergency organizations including EMS, FIRE, Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), Medical Reserve Corp. (MRC), Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Emergency Management, Police Explorers, Red Cross, Salvation Army, State Animal Rescue Team (SART), Civil Air Patrol, and Amateur Radio. The toll-free phone number is: 877-962-5646.

The program will be rebroadcast without live call-in segments on:

• Sunday, September 14, 2008 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on MyTV9.
• Saturday, September 27 at 11:30 a.m. on CPTV
• Sunday, September 28 at 6 p.m. on CPTV

(During rebroadcasts, callers can access information on recruitment by phoning 2-1-1 or 1-800-FIRE-LINE)

"On Watch: Connecticut's Emergency Service Volunteers" is a CPTV Connecting Our Communities initiative in partnership with the State of Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Citizen Corps, the Commission on Fire Prevention and Control, the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Public Health Foundation of Connecticut. Additional support comes from the Torrington Medical Reserve Corps.

Other Volunteer Groups Across the National Prepare for Gustav - Other Model Programs

The following article was submitted to the CERT Yahoo group by Jerry Reimer and submitted to the Neighbors Helping Neighbors blog by Ric Skinner - "... Some models here for other CERTs to emulate."

Late Friday afternoon, this message went to all Harris County (TX) Citizen Corps members regarding possible CERT use for evacuation assistance.

Since it's inception in 2001, until recently, Mark Sloan was the Citizen Corps coordinator; now the county's emergency management coordinator. For his efforts sheltering Hurricane Katrina evacuees, he was named ABC News' "Person of the Week" for September 9 2005

Harris County Citizen Corps Volunteers: If the storm begins to approach our portion of the Texas Gulf coast, we will need volunteers to support evacuation activities this weekend.

If this is necessary, you will receive an e-mail indicating times and location. Additionally, we will active the emergency / disaster button on the homepage of the website where volunteer information will be posted. Also please monitor the http://www.hcoem.org/ website for periodic updates on the storm.

Enjoy the long weekend and again thank you for making our region safer and better prepared!
