Happy Anniversary Neighbors Helping Neighbors Blog

One year ago today, as part of National Preparedness Month 2007, we launched the Neighbors Helping Neighbors blog as part of a local awareness campaign.

Within one year, the blog has grown to become an international resource sharing best practices from around the world, with a focus on emergency response volunteers, including youth.

We have now reached over

13,000 people
70 countries
1,500 cities

This does not include the thousands of people who regularly read this blog through RSS feeds.

As part of National Preparedness Month 2008, we have really taken this forum to the next level by announcing an International Youth Representative and National Representative.

Demonstrating that volunteers can make a difference and share best practices "Locally and Around the World".

Stay Safe!

Andrew S. Levy, Executive Director

It is unbelievable what one person was able to do in terms of outreach with not one dollar.

Your efforts are a model for other people and other programs.

Job well done.

Thank you for putting Citizen Corps and CERT on the map.

You got us in the VA Department of Emergency Management Newsletter a lot. You got us in the Homeland Security Newsletter.

You left for Philipines and Citizen Corps got quite. Now that you are back, I hope things start up again.

Welcome back. I missed you.

When you left I have not heard anything from the council. It is a shame people did not step in when you were gone. I think OEM was waiting for you to come back. There was suppose to be meetings this summer but I did not get any emails. Once you get settled in I look forward to getting involved again.

The volunteer coordinator was "reassigned".

Leadership changed twice over the past few months. A new director was hired from outside. She just started this month. See seems like a no nonsense person and will not let the employees run her shop. Now that you are back time to move forward.

The news reads Fairfax County is looking at a $430 million shortfall. Loudoun County is facing a budget deficit of $176 million. No county can avoid this.

Each dept will be forced to cut positions. The belts will be tighter. Govt employees will have greater accountability or their jobs will be cut.

What do you do to show for yourself?Govt will be dependent on volunteers.
